CATL’s new battery factory is capable of producing one cell per second

Jakarta (Antara) – China’s battery manufacturer, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd., or CATL for short, has recently inaugurated its latest battery factory in China’s Guizhou province, which is claimed to be capable of producing one cell per second.

This first phase of the factory has an area of approximately 590,000 square meters and an investment value of 895 million euros. The new factory has an astonishing 95 percent automation rate.

Cnevpost reported on Monday (30/10) local time that the factory is capable of producing not only one cell in a short time. This new factory, with a very high level of automation, can assemble an entire battery in just 2.5 minutes.

CATL said that the production capacity of the first phase of this factory reached 30 GW per year. After the completion of the second phase, production will increase to 60 GWh per year.

According to South Korean market research firm SNE Research, CATL’s global market share from January to August was 36.9 percent. This makes it the world’s largest battery maker, and the only company to cross the 30 percent mark during that period.

Nevertheless, CATL’s net profit decreased by 4.3 percent in the third quarter, but the company still achieved an increase of about 10.43 billion RMB and was considered a considerable increase of about 10.7 percent compared to the previous year.

CATL’s domestic market share also saw a slight decline this year. Data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA) shows CATL’s market share was 39.41 percent as of September. This is the first decline below 40 percent since April last year.
